INTRODUCTION.

According to Section 3 of the Meat Safety Act (Act 40 of 2000), a person or body may be authorized to perform certain functions, e.g. meat inspection, at an abattoir in South Africa. This is often referred to as so-called 'independent meat inspection' and internationally accepted as an industry norm with regards to legal compliance. Following on the first draft official publica­ tion of the criteria used to define 'independence', the need was recognized to establish a body able to fully comply with all the requirements of these criteria. Enters Agency for Food Safety, a private company consisting of highly experienced meat inspection personnel and internationally recognized expertise in Veterinary Public Health (VPH).
